Abstract
The talk will contribute to the discussion the experience of Fondazione Fitzcarraldo in researching, training, and advising on cultural management and policies. The aim is to offer a general framework on the institutional practices in art and culture, a point of view on the current trends to which media art institutions respond or give input with different institutional models and modus operandi. It is our belief that media art institutions cannot be separated from the vast majority of issues occurring within the cultural domain on the whole. Media art institutions confront the same 'industrial' mindset as other cultural institutions, in pursuing their own activities. On the cultural policies side, such a mindset is informed by a Marshall oriented approach unable to understand and support any activity not producing 'tangible' outcomes (in a way, privileging 'hardware' instead of 'software'). The same mindset also informs institutional fund raising, oriented towards the main centres of activity instead of supporting those 'creative environments' where innovation grows and flourishes. It is what our latest research, named 'Creative Europe' and realised in collaboration with ERICARTS, has pointed out. Another aspect of the problem is what doesn't 'physically' affect territory cannot be understood through traditional research tools. For many years Fondazione Fitzcarraldo has been researching, advising and training new generations of cultural managers in order to build a bridge between traditional and new mindsets and the artistic and cultural fields.
