Text c6, a London based arts group established in 1997, create participatory art in multiple arenas, often linking the street (graffiti, stencils) with the web using mobile phones and portable devices, software art and innovative marketing strategies of media intervention. For 'Social Hacking' project c6 will work with the Arch-OS system (http://www.arch-os.com) located in the Portland Square Building, University of Plymouth. Arch-OS is an 'operating system' for contemporary architecture developed to manifest the dynamic life of a building. This unique system incorporates a range of embedded technologies to capture audio-visual and raw digital data from the building through a variety of sources, including: the 'Building Energy Management System (BEMS), computer and communications networks, the flow of people and social interactions, ambient noise levels and environmental conditions. By making the invisible and temporal aspects of the building tangible, Arch-OS creates a rich and dynamic set of opportunities for research, educational and cultural activities. c6 propose to create new public work that operates in both physical and online spaces. c6 propose to replicate the building and the Arch_OS system in Second Life, creating a connected online and offline space for cultural and artistic expression. It will create a new set of experiences, art concepts and interactive systems for new audiences (offline and online) investigating relationships between high art and subculture, between emergent and ‘traditional’ types of audiences and cultural spaces (offline and online). C6 are particularly interested in anthropromorphising the building: letting it express its state as if alive. Further referencing to the connection between the interplay of a building and its users, and an organism and its environment c6 further would like to hold a one day workshop to disseminate and share their knowledge, system and software to other artists / technologists / engineers.
