The first contribution to the Barszcz source code repository is Jaromil’s string based cooking written in the programming language C. We are looking for further barszcz recipes expressed as source code to add to the repository.

Barszcz [often written Borscht] is a traditional Eastern and Central European soup of red beetroot that comes in many regional and seasonal varieties. The recipe below is for Ukrainian Barszcz (alternative recipes for Borscht can be found here).

Barszcz source code

Take 4 or 5 fresh organic beetroots, wash and peel. Cook whole beetroots with a few carrots, parsnips and chopped white cabbage in strips. Cook until soft, then remove carrots and parships. Cool beetroots and grate them coarsely, place back in soup. Add white large cooked beans (biala fasola). Add some cooked wild mushrooms and their juices. Add pepper, a pinch of salt and sugar, and plenty of marjoram, and some lemon juice. Add extra vegetable stock if required. Simmer until ready to eat. Serve with a dollop of full fat sour cream or yoghurt if preferred.

NOTE: The project stresses the parallel between programming and recipes in a cookbook as a set of instructions to follow. Like cooking recipes, examining the source code of a particular program reveals information about the software in much the same way as the ingredients and set of instructions of a recipe reveals information about the dish to be prepared. The analogy reveals something of the interests involved in the preparation, execution and consumption of the (software) work. Both programming and cooking can express intentionality, style and should be accompanied with a health warning. All source code/recipes submitted to the repository are released under the GNU General Public License.
